I watched an interesting show lately on Tyra Banks in which they had a panel of straight people and a panel of gay/lesbian people.  The purpose was to discuss homophobia (I think the title was something like "is gay the new black").  One of the issues voiced from an African American on the straight side of the isle was that it is completely inappropriate to compare racism and homophobia.  I have had African American friends who have voiced the same sentiment.  I believe the reasoning is because African Americans can not hide the color of their skin.

While I understand that it is certainly a benefit to be able to hide the fact that one is gay (well, some of us are better at it than others), there is the question of how harmful it is to hide who we are.

It seems like this board, and in particular,  this subcategory, would be a great place to have this discussion.  Hearing from people who suffer both forms of prejudice would really be interesting.  Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?

That's just ridiculous! Gay is the new black! This is becuase us gays are shunned from society just like black people once were, it has nothing to do with color or orientation. Both were/are shunned from society and that's why it's the same!
