Star Trek Beyond
Movie Blurb by Shale
July 22, 2016
This was my "to see" movie this week and I biked up to the Aventura AMC 24 for an early matinee, that not only cost me $6.73 but I was surprised to get a Star Trek pendant with it.
The movie was action adventure from the beginning, with Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine), 3 years into their 5-year mission trying to negotiate a peace settlement with some small obstinate aliens that turns into a melee on the chamber floor. Kirk is getting fed up with being captain on these routine missions and is considering a desk job. Also, Commander Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Lt. Uhura (Zoe Saldana) are having a lovers spat and may be splitting up. The rest of the crew,
Ensign Pavel Chekov (Anton Yelchin), Lt. Sulu (John Cho), Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (Simon Pegg) and Dr. "Bones" McCoy (Karl Urban) are hanging in there with the little signs of service members too long away, such as Sulu's foto of his daughter at his console. The Enterprise is docking at the huge Starbase Yorktown to resupply and much needed shoreleave. (This is where we briefly see the reunion of Sulu with his husband and daughter in passing)
This is where they encounter an alien, Kalara (Lydia Wilson) who came out of a nearby nebula in an escape pod. She claims her ship was stranded and the Enterprise is dispatched to give assistance. Of course you can see this coming - the Enterprise is attacked and seriously damaged by some serious new weapons deployed by Krall (Idris Elba), a really bad alien. (Lots of Dead Redshirts in this scene)
The entire crew has to abandon ship and end up on the planet below, where many are taken prisoner, but some are still evading capture. Scotty encounters an alien woman, Jayla (Sofia Boutella) who has been there a while and is quite the engineer scavenging parts.
They team up and eventually McCoy and badly wounded Spock show up as well as Chekov and Kirk.
Spock, Jayla & Bones
The rest of the movie is this team trying to figure a way to fight Krall and his minions and get off the planet.

I enjoyed this movie the same as 87% of the aggregate reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Their consensus was: "Star Trek Beyond continues the franchise's post-reboot hot streak with an epic sci-fi adventure that honors the series' sci-fi roots without skimping on the blockbuster action."
Simon Pegg was one of the writers and there are a few comic moments. Also, some of the plot had elements of the 1996 movie Mars Attacks! and the 2008 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still. You may see what I'm mentioning as you watch.
If you are a Trekker, I think you have enjoyed this movie. Yeah, real Trekkers see it on opening day.
BTW, my 8-mile bike ride starting at 10:30 am did not seem so hot, but apparently I was sweating. When I got the ST pendant, I put it on and got a pic. I was totally unaware how much I had drenched my shirt until I saw the pic. Just life in SoFlo I guess.
