The nation's first TransLife housing facility opened Monday in Chicago.

Chicago House, the non-profit organization and former AIDS hospice, is located in the Edgewater neighborhood. It opened its doors to work toward helping transgendered homelessness, organizers said.

The facility will house up to nine individuals at a time and will provide medical and job support without discrimination.

Chicago native Lana Wachowski, an openly transgender woman and producer of Hollywood movies such as "The Matrix," "V for Vendetta" and "Cloud Atlas," attended the ribbon cutting event along with several local government officials.
