I've visited Vancouver Canada and what a wonderful lgbt community! It is a very open city with lots to do. The Pride day rocked and their lgbt street (I believe it was called Davis Street) was very pleasant and large. There are many lgbt friendly bars and restaurants and a variety of people. It is also very pretty - with so much of its coast line open to the public. The people we met were all out, proud and centered people!
I'm guessing it would also be a great place to live - if you don't mind crowds and traffic. But - I haven't ever lived there so I really can not speak to that issue. When talking to locals, they seemed to love it - but there were mixed feelings toward the health care system.
