Hi! I'm a college student working towards becoming a psychologist specializing in counseling GLBT youth. I was hoping to learn about some good resources for transgendered people. Do you have a favorite book or movie that has helped you or that accurately depicts transgendered life? While this topic is touched on briefly in class, I'm hoping to further my understanding of the special trials and tribulations associated with being a transgendered person. Any book title/website/etc that you could refer me to would be undeniably helpful!
Thank you!

Hello forum,

Thank you for allowing me to join up, I wanted to reply to this request of information for someone looking to help the CD/TG/TS/TV community by listing a few resources that may help (and provide further resources within each one). These sites and books have been a lot of help to me and many others I know, I hope they help. ;) - this site is a wonderful resource that has been of immesureable help to me and many other mtfs, with links to ftm information as well. - even though the radio show hasn't been on for a bit now, there is gendervision videos that come out on occaision. These folk gave a voice to general information, worries, concerns, reguardless of it's age, and had a lot of fun doing it. Also, there is a great deal of links, site listings, and news on this site...I suggest this to everyone who asks me for 'first time information' because of it's serious importance with a light hearted flow. - Ethan St. Pierre is a ftm activist with a radio show (listen here >>> <<<;), that is very similar to Gendertalk but is currently going, and therefore has current news....besides, he's an extremely fun host and has intriguing guests from activists, people in office, doctors that handle certain procedures mtf/ftm, musicians/artists, etc....

Here's a list of books that I highly reccommend for anyone wanting to know more about transgender is as an umbrella term for everyone TS/TV/CD, non-op, pre-op, post-op, cisgender....woah, so many things to know....hehe, it can seem daunting.

Try these out:

True Selves / Mildred L. Brown & Chloe Ann Rounsley / ISBN: 0-7879-0271-3 or 0-7879-6702-5 / As titled it's for families, friends, coworkers, and helping professionals and it's full of resources and excellent information.

She's Not the Man I Married & My Husband Betty / Helen Boyd / ISBN: 1-58005-193-6 or 978-1-58005-193-4 / Both books are from the perspective and heart of the wife of a transgendered person. Although it doesn't address mtf issues, it is an excellent resource for understanding how transsexualism/transgender issues impact the other person in a relationship...also full of wonderful resources and information.

...there are many more books, however the resources that are listed above will take you to such authors as Jan Morris, Jennifer Finney Boylan, Jennifer Seeley, and if you really want to have fun with it, and see the lighthearted side of crossdressing and interesting perspectives of womanhood from the eyes of a wonderful woman...Veronica Vera A.K.A. Miss Vera^^

lol, I hope I didn't overwhelm you friend...please feel free to contact me on my facebook, or email me if I can provide any further assistance to you, and therefore to my brothers and sisters of the butterfly~*

Much love, and the best of wishes...

~Natalie R.~

While some folks have found the above books and sites helpful, they're quite dated at this point (the books more so than the sites).  In particular I very much don't recommend True Selves as it focuses on one very specific and archaic definition of Trans person, and I've heard from a lot of people whose loved ones read it and then insisted that they couldn't be Trans because they didn't fit the book's very narrow definition.

Here's some more recent stuff that a lot of people have found extremely helpful: - resource/info central - ten-minute YouTube on coming out as FTM - keep checking back because new ones are added every day - keep checking back because new ones are added every day - keep checking back because new ones are added every day

* Luna by Julie Anne Peters
* Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger
* Just Add Hormones by Matt Kailey
* Becoming a Visible Man by Jamison Green
* She's Not There by Jennifer Finney Boylan
* Transgender Emergence by Arlene Istar Lev (for therapists)
* The Transgender Child by Stephanie Brill and Rachel Pepper
* Trans Forming Families, edited by Mary Boenke (third edition, 2008) - available from PFLAG's Transgender Network for $10 US
* The Our Trans Children leaflet (sixth edition) - available from PFLAG's Transgender Network for $2 US, or you can save and print it yourself for free.  The booklet is their only source of revenue, so if you can pay for it, please do!
* TransGeneration (Ignore what Lucas says in the first episode about hormones being "very dangerous" - they're not, not if you get them through a competent doctor and have regular - which usually means annual - bloodwork, and that was irresponsible of him to say.)
(The books, aside from Trans Forming Families, can be ordered on or you can get the ISBNs from and bring them to any bookstore to order them. Trans Forming Families is available from PFLAG's Transgender Network for $10 US. The DVD can be ordered on also, as you see from the link.)
