I was looking for a gay atheist forum to join when I came upon this forum. I am not comfortable posting on either religious or non LGBT forums as has been my experience in the past that heterosexuals for the most part dislike LGBT's and most religions do too. I live in a small town, population 8,000 in the southwest and although there is a very large gay community here with several gays in government or public buildings named after them, I do not associate with them as they all live on one side of town and I live on the other. I am also heavily in the civil rights movement picketing a restaurant back in 1944 that would not allow black people to eat in it in a large western city. Then in the late forties to early fifties I got involved with both the African-American and Hispanic civil rights movement. For the last 40 years I have been in the LGBT civil rights movement. Most minorities in the USA now have equal rights, but not LGBT. This bothers me because some of the most outspoken bigots against LGBT are some of the very minorities I marched with and were involved with. And what is even worse is there are still a few sick brain-washed individuals who allege lesbians and gays choose that "lifestyle" or are "sick" in the face of scientific proof that a heterosexual in no way can be attracted to their own sex as its physically impossible, unless everyone on earth are bisexuals. And to say the choose and are sick, is to say four and five year old's as well as animals have a choice or are sick. And if that is the case that four and five year old's are that intelligent, then why bother going to school? And if animals have the ability to choose, then they are as smart as we are. Anyway you may have guessed that I am not far from 80 and you would be right. I live a healthy life style, don't smoke or drink alcoholic beverages or use illegal drugs. My hobbies are extreme hiking (that's hiking up 40% grades in the mountains), camping out (in a tent), visiting interesting places, traveling, rock collecting, writing and meeting new people around the world. I also like to paint (on canvas.)

Wow.  80 and still hiking mountains!  That is so impressive!  You rock!

You sure have seen lgbt rights go through some changes.  I share your frustration with other mintorities seemimg to make a distinction between the prejudice they suffer and the prejudice the lgbt community suffers.  I think it goes back to the misconception that being gay is a choice - and, of course, organized religion.

Thanks for joining our forum.  As you can tell, we are just starting - so send our link along to your friends! Lets get this party started!

I had no idea you were new, but I will do my best to point people in your direction as I am on facebook and a few other sites. I am a disco dancer too and still do all of the moves, but mainly for exercise although I do enjoy dancing. When I was 72 I entered a disco dancing contest and beat out twenty and thirty year old's winning the contest and getting a blue ribbon. The women went bananas and some younger men in their late thirties started noticing me and inviting me to their parties, but I not much of a night bird any longer never showed up. And I still like the kind of movies I did when I was in my teens; horror, satire, high adventure and science fiction. Mad TV was my favorite comedy show but I think it was canceled. I said close to 80 as I will be 78 come July which I regard as close to 80, but I'll never change in my actions, thinking or style as I am a true rebel and get up in people's face who go after the GLBT community to try and straighten them out and if I can't I do to them what they do to us, "So you say gays choose to be gay, then you chose to be an idiot. You weren't born an idiot, you chose to be an idiot as its a life style and against nature." That puts them on the defensive which I could care less.

LOL!  Thats a great response!

It is difficult to figure out the most "centered" way to respond to homophobic people.  Especially when it is someone whom we deal with on a daily basis (say at work) and feel like we know them and respect them.  Then one day they make a homophobic remark - and it sorta lets the air out of the baloon.  its like, "Shit, not again".

This small town of 8000 I live in has a very large gay community of business people, art gallery owners, government officials and the like including some very famous gay people and they even have government buildings named in their honor and although many accept them there are those who for the most part are Republicans who allege gays choose that "life-style" and when I ask them "Did you choose to be a heterosexual to live that life style?" They usually reply, "It is not a life style as I was born that way." And I question them "How can you say that as no one is born a heterosexual, they choose to be as its a life style and against nature as everyone is born bisexual. Science have proven that." Oh that try to argue with me but they can not win because at my age I have heard all of their lies and bullshit and I use their own propaganda BS to throw right back at them. I even go on the internet to Christian sites and tell them that the reason God has been sending floods, earthquakes, cold winters and famine on the world is because they are condemning homosexuality and there fore God is punishing them all. I told them that the earthquake in Haiti and Chili was caused because those people prosecuted the gays and God was punishing them for doing so. In other words I am giving them a dish of their own crap back to them. What's good for the goose is good for the gander and unlike many in the gay community I am not afraid to face up to these bigots and tell them they are sociopaths and latent homosexuals because I tell them "if you say you hate gays then you must be one your self other wise if you've so straight it shouldn't bother you unless you are gay yourself then by attacking other gays it makes you appear less gay." Oh they hate that and often use the excuse "the bible is against it." But since I am an ordained minister I reply to them that the bible we have is not the true bible as there is no place in the bible condemning homosexuality and the false bible they have come to believe in was written by the Catholic church and the word homosexual was first coined in 1869 by a German scientist.
